Agile or plan-driven project management methods

How do you choose between agile or plan-driven methods for projects?

Professor at the Department of Humanities and Technology at Roskilde University, Jan Pries-Heje, has researched precisely this.

In a literature search and as described in the book “Agile Projects”, Pries-Heje identified 11 dimensions that are crucial for the choice:

1. Expected requirements changes: Choose agile methods if the project will experience many changes and needs rapid adaptation.

2. Project size: Smaller projects can often handle agile methods better.

3. Clarity of project purpose: Agile methods are best when the full scope cannot be defined in advance.

4. Consensus among stakeholders: Agile methods work best with consensus and minimal political disagreement.

5. Team experience: An experienced team can better handle agile project management.

6. Available time: Agile methods often require shorter timeframes and fast delivery.

7. Developers' experience: Developers with agile experience are an advantage for agile projects.

8. Team members' experience: Each team member's experience contributes to the success of the project.

9. Geographic location: Agile methods can be challenging when the team is spread across multiple time zones.

10. Team motivation: A motivated team is crucial to the success of the project.

11. Criticality of errors: In projects where errors can have serious consequences, plan-driven methods can be safer.

These 11 dimensions have collided into the “starfish” below with 5 things
